Sultanahmet or Taksim? Where Should You Stay in Istanbul?

Historic Old City or modern Istanbul? Here is how to choose the neighborhood that suits your travel style.

Dear Visitors,

One of the questions I hear most often from travelers planning their first trip to Istanbul is: “Aydın, should we stay in Sultanahmet or Taksim?”

Well, that depends. Do you love early mornings exploring historic monuments, or prefer cafés, shopping, music and lively evenings?

Sultanahmet wakes up early. Taksim stays awake late. That is probably the simplest way I can explain the difference.

Sultanahmet: History, Early Mornings and Peaceful Evenings

If you are visiting Istanbul for its incredible history, Sultanahmet is a wonderful place to stay. You can wake up just minutes from Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, then walk to the Hippodrome, Basilica Cistern, Topkapı Palace and Arasta Bazaar.

Early mornings can be surprisingly peaceful. Later, sightseeing groups arrive and the streets fill with visitors. After sunset, the neighborhood gradually quiets down. There are still restaurants and rooftops for a lovely dinner, but not the same concentration of late-night entertainment as Beyoğlu.

Many older travelers enjoy staying close to the monuments and returning to their hotel for a break. But Sultanahmet is not only for older travelers: the best choice depends on your interests, not your age.

Taksim: The City That Comes Alive in the Evening

Taksim and Beyoğlu offer another personality of Istanbul: energetic streets, shops, cafés, restaurants, music and nightlife. Taksim Square is an important transport hub even in the morning, while some nearby entertainment streets become livelier later in the day.

Explore İstiklal Avenue, historic passages, churches and architecture, then continue to Cihangir, Galata or Karaköy. Beyoğlu is not simply a modern shopping district; it has its own fascinating layers of history.

If you enjoy going out after dinner, this area offers more choices than Sultanahmet. Many younger travelers appreciate that energy, but again, age is not the deciding factor.

What About Restaurants?

Sultanahmet offers traditional restaurants, cafés and rooftop dining with views of the historic monuments. Beyoğlu generally has a wider variety of evening dining and entertainment, from traditional Turkish restaurants to modern cafés and international cuisine.

I would not say one area has universally better food. Some of the most memorable meals are found in small places you discover along the way.

Which Area Is Better for Transportation?

In Sultanahmet, many historic attractions are walkable, and the T1 tram connects to Eminönü, Karaköy and Kabataş. Keep in mind the hills, cobblestones and narrow streets if you have luggage.

Taksim has the M2 metro and the F1 funicular to Kabataş, where you can connect to the T1 tram toward Sultanahmet. Some Beyoğlu side streets are steep too, so check the exact hotel location.

Is Sultanahmet or Taksim Better for Families?

For families focused on historic monuments, I often recommend Sultanahmet: shorter journeys and the chance to return to the hotel when children need a break. Families with teenagers who enjoy shopping and city life may prefer Beyoğlu. Choose a convenient hotel and a realistic sightseeing plan.

Is One Neighborhood Safer Than the Other?

Both are popular visitor areas, and neither is free from ordinary big-city risks. Watch your belongings around crowded attractions and transport stops in Sultanahmet. Around busy nightlife streets in Taksim, stay aware of your surroundings late in the evening. I would not automatically describe one whole neighborhood as safer than the other.

Can You Enjoy Both During One Trip?

Absolutely. If you stay in Sultanahmet, spend a day around Galata, Karaköy, Taksim Square and İstiklal Street, perhaps with dinner in Beyoğlu. If you stay in Taksim, dedicate a day or two to the Old City. With five nights or more, splitting your stay between the areas can also be interesting.

My Final Advice: Old City or Modern City?

Choose Sultanahmet if you want to wake up surrounded by history and enjoy quieter evenings.

Choose Taksim if you enjoy lively restaurants, shopping and staying out later.

It is not about being young or old; it is about what makes you happy when you travel. Sultanahmet tells you the stories of Istanbul's past. Taksim invites you to experience the rhythm of its present.

Warm regards,
Aydın
