Dear Visitors,

One question I hear almost every day is: “Aydın, can we visit Hagia Sophia? Is it a mosque or a museum? And do we need to buy a ticket?”

I understand the confusion. Some websites say Hagia Sophia is free, while others say you need a ticket. Both can be true depending on whether you are entering for worship or sightseeing. Let me explain as a licensed Istanbul guide with a particular interest in Constantinople's history.

First, Is Hagia Sophia a Mosque or a Museum?

Hagia Sophia is currently an active mosque, officially the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque (Ayasofya-i Kebir Cami-i Şerifi). Completed in AD 537 under Emperor Justinian I, it served as a Christian cathedral for centuries, including a period as a Roman Catholic cathedral during the Latin occupation (1204–1261). Following the Ottoman conquest in 1453, it became an imperial mosque. The government decided to make it a museum in 1934, and it opened as one in 1935. In July 2020, it returned to mosque status.

The building still combines Byzantine mosaics, marble and architecture with Ottoman calligraphy and later additions. That layered history is why I enjoy explaining it to guests.

Do You Need a Ticket to Enter Hagia Sophia?

Two different reasons to enter

Admission to the prayer area is free for Muslim worship. Foreign tourists using the designated upper-gallery sightseeing route need a ticket.

The published standard ticket price for foreign sightseeing visitors is €25 per person. Children under eight may enter the sightseeing area free when accompanied by an adult and with valid identification. The Istanbul Museum Pass does not cover this ticket.

The ticket is for the upper-gallery visitor route, not unrestricted access to the ground-floor prayer hall. Entering for worship is not a way to avoid the sightseeing ticket.

From the upper gallery you can admire the great dome, the extraordinary scale of the interior and surviving Byzantine mosaics. The view helps you understand how the building's Christian and Ottoman histories meet. The ground-floor prayer area is reserved primarily for worship, so visitors who remember the pre-2020 museum experience should expect a different route today.

Where Is the Tourist Entrance?

The sightseeing entrance and ticket office are near the Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III and the Topkapı Palace side of Hagia Sophia. Follow current visitor-entrance signs and staff instructions. The entrance for worship is separate; approaching from Sultanahmet Square can lead to confusion if you are looking for the paid tourist route.

Can I Buy Hagia Sophia Tickets Online?

Tickets are available at the visitor ticket office and through online resellers. Advance purchase can save time at the ticket-purchase queue, but no ticket allows you to bypass mandatory security screening. Compare the final price and service fees before paying online.

Is Hagia Sophia Open Every Day?

Hagia Sophia is generally open daily, but tourist hours can change with the season, prayers, restoration and other operational requirements. Sightseeing access is normally interrupted on Fridays around midday, often approximately 12:00–14:00. Check current information before your visit, particularly if you are traveling on Friday.

What Should I Wear?

Hagia Sophia is an active place of worship. Dress modestly, cover shoulders and legs appropriately, and bring a headscarf if you are a woman. Follow posted footwear rules for any prayer area, avoid disturbing worshippers and respect photography restrictions. Coverings may be sold near the entrance.

Is Hagia Sophia Worth the €25 Entrance Fee?

If you are interested in Byzantine history, architecture or religious art, the upper-gallery visit is well worth considering. But four €25 tickets total €100, before visiting other paid attractions. If you mainly want exterior photographs, the monumental building and surrounding Sultanahmet Square can be appreciated without a sightseeing ticket.

A licensed local guide can help you understand what you are seeing and plan the visit realistically, without promising to bypass security or restricted areas.

My Favorite Part of Hagia Sophia's Story

Dear Visitors, I often ask guests to imagine Constantinople in the sixth century, with Justinian's enormous church rising above the imperial city. Then we picture the Ottoman era, the minarets and the call to prayer, followed by the museum years and today's working mosque. To me, Hagia Sophia tells nearly 1,500 years of Istanbul's history.

The real value of visiting Hagia Sophia is understanding the extraordinary story behind what you are seeing.

Warm regards,
Aydın
