  • Chora/Kariye exterior and interior when officially open
  • Byzantine history explained on location
  • Balat or a related historic neighborhood stop as time allows
  • Private vehicle for an otherwise difficult route
READ THE CITY AS A WHOLE

Why this route needs a storyteller

The land walls, Chora and the surrounding neighborhoods make sense when their geography is connected to sieges, imperial ceremony, sacred art and the final centuries of Constantinople. Your licensed guide turns separated monuments into one continuous historical landscape.

What your guide brings together

  • The defensive logic of the Theodosian Walls
  • The historical geography of Edirnekapı and the Golden Horn
  • The visual program of Chora’s mosaics and frescoes
  • The transition from Byzantine Constantinople to Ottoman Istanbul
  • A realistic route between sites outside the standard Sultanahmet circuit
THE RIGHT ROUTE FOR THE RIGHT DAY

Opening days change the experience—not the quality.

This is a specialist private route, so we build the day around the places that are genuinely accessible. We never promise an interior visit when an official closure, worship schedule or restoration makes it impossible.

OPEN-DAY ROUTE

Classic walls route

When access is confirmed, the route can include Yedikule Fortress, selected Theodosian Wall viewpoints, Tekfur Palace or its surroundings, and Chora/Kariye.

MONDAY

Byzantine landscape alternative

Yedikule Fortress and Tekfur Palace are officially closed on Mondays. We replace interiors with meaningful wall gates, Golden Gate context, Edirnekapı viewpoints, historic neighborhoods and other relevant stops.

FRIDAY · CHORA CLOSED

Sacred art with live access checks

Chora/Kariye is closed to touristic visits on Fridays. Access on other days can still change for daily prayer times, restoration or official decisions. We reconfirm shortly before the tour and adjust the sequence when needed.

Our planning promise: if a major interior is unavailable, we explain it before the tour whenever notice is available and preserve the historical theme with the strongest practical alternative—not a random replacement stop.

  • Hotel pickup/drop-off in the central service area
  • Route planning around current access

Not included

Meeting & pickup

Central hotel pickup is expected because the sites are dispersed. Pickup outside the normal service area can require a supplement.

Tickets

Chora/Kariye operates under official visitor and worship rules that can change. Any required admission is separate; current access is reconfirmed shortly before the tour.

Duration & walking

Typically 5–6 hours with short vehicle transfers and about 2–4 km of uneven walking.

Suitability & accessibility

Best for history, art and architecture enthusiasts. Wall viewpoints can involve rough ground and exposed roadside areas; a modified route is available for reduced mobility.

Payment, confirmation & cancellation

Your request is reviewed before it becomes a confirmed booking. Cash in EUR, USD, TRY or GBP is preferred; card payment at the office POS normally carries the bank’s approximately 5–7% processing fee. Unless your written quote states a stricter supplier term, cancellation at least 24 hours before service is refundable. Yacht, special vehicle, ticket and third-party activity bookings may have separate conditions, which are shown before payment.

No compulsory shopping—ever

There are no required carpet, leather, jewelry, spice or souvenir stops. A shop, market or workshop is included only when it is part of the advertised subject or you ask for it. You are always free to leave without buying.

Know before you go

  • Interior access and photography rules at active religious sites must be respected.
  • Traffic along the walls can alter stop order.
  • Some wall sections are viewed from ground level for safety.
  • This is not a climb-on-the-walls experience.

Questions guests ask

Is Chora always open to visitors?

No. Religious services, restoration or official scheduling can affect access; we reconfirm and offer a meaningful alternative if needed.

Can we walk on the city walls?

We do not promise unsafe or restricted access. The guide uses legal viewpoints and accessible sections.

Why is a vehicle included?

The walls and Chora are spread across districts and inefficient to combine on foot.

Is this suitable for children?

Yes for history-interested families, though younger children may prefer a shorter version.
